Cultural Context & History

The Houston Mediterranean Festival represents the strong Mediterranean communities that settled in Houston's Near Northside and Montrose areas in the early 1900s. Greek families and Lebanese merchants established businesses that became Houston institutions. Today, the festival serves as a bridge between generations, allowing immigrant families to share their heritage while welcoming new Houstonians into their traditions. The authentic recipes, traditional dances, and cultural exhibits preserve customs that might otherwise be lost in America's melting pot.
